There are a set of musicians today, mostly rappers, who’s music could easily be described as weed-rap. Ganja-rhymes or spliff- hop would probably be suitable as well, but either way, the content of these musician’s lyrics is forever in debt to the sticky green substance they were more-than-likely smoking while making the track. Off the top of my head, and yes there are plenty more, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Kid Cudi reign supreme in this group of rappers. So it was no surprise when Cudi’s 2010 album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager featured a track dedicated to his drug of choice, but what was a surprise was when Shia Labeouf came on board to direct the visuals for “Marijuana”. The video dropped today, and well, it’s cool, but since they made such a big deal out of the fact Labeouf was directing it, I figured the video would feature a little more direction. It’s simply a documentary style following of Kid Cudi and crew on their journey to Amsterdam. I like the vintage style they went with, but that’s about the extent of the creativity in Shia Labeouf’s directorial debut. I don’t blame him though, he was probably stoned throughout the entire shoot.
