Fucking great week for new tracks. There’s that Adele Bond theme (more on that soon) and then there’s “Losing You” by Solange (aka Beyonce’s sister aka the new face of Madewell––good call, Madewell). This is first music we’ve heard from Solange in a while. It’s an incredible song. And an incredible video.
Its beat is both vaguely retro and futuristic. It’s nice n hip-shaking. It’s endlessly listenable. But the lyric is what makes it. A break up song of the highest caliber, “Losing You” features such pop-nugs like “we used to kiss all night but now there’s just no use,” “I don’t know why I fight it clearly we are through,” and “I’m not the one that you should be making your enemy.” It’s the perfect mixture of heartbreak and pop. It’s the first big (if it isn’t already, it’s going to be big) pop song I’ve heard in some time that so expertly blends the two. Parting is pain but it’s pop. It’s the kind of classic self-contained single we’ll be looking back on very fondly years from now.
Now let’s talk about the video. Dateline: hot, sunny, Cape Town, South Africa. Solange is beautiful, clearly, and everyone here is wearing the perfect strange and colorful clothes. Tons of outfit changes. I really like the way Solange isn’t really even front and center all that much, yet still, subtly, steals the show. And her clothes are great too. Tons of outfit changes. There are great shots all over this thing: when she’s snapping in the van; when she’s singing on top of the stack of mattresses; when she’s dancing in the brick-covered suit outside the clothing store near the end; when she’s dancing in the bleachers like no one’s watching.
The “Losing You” single (backed with “Sleep In the Park”) is out now digitally and on vinyl on November 6 (election day!) via, interestingly, Terrible Records.
