Underground pop legend James Ferraro continues to explore the way we live today with a brand new EP and album. The EP, entitled Condo Pets (cover art above), was a total surprise and was released on iTunes at midnight last night. It is supposed to act as an introduction to his forthcoming full-length, Far Side Virtual , out on October 25th via Hippos In Tanks.
Ferraro has been making art-damaged exploratory pop music for years, starting out as one half of the experimental duo the Skaters. Now solo, his work has become fascinated with and rooted in modern American life. 2009’s classic Last American Hero expertly depicts the mundanity of 21st century American life. It sounds like modern folk music, all looped digitized guitar and roving, dusty repetition. Judging by Condo Pets’ cleaner and shimmering tracks (and its artwork and song titles…..”Text Bubbles,” “Find Out What’s On Carrie Bradshaw’s iPod”, et al.), Far Side Virtual is going to be another modern American outsider pop classic.
From Hippos in Tanks:
“What we find here is a work of pure modernism. a new index of futurism that abandons paranoia and anxiety for new thoughts on the dynamics between technology and humans, introducing us to a world of iPads and Augmented Humanity. A gesture towards a world gracefully empty of humans but filled with pure impressionistic beauty experienced through newly acquired appendages of the digital nature.”
