The venerable Rick Ross (@RickyRozay) has a brand new mixtape out care of Maybach Music Group. It’s called Rich Forever (#RICHFOREVER). I have yet to listen to the whole thing, but judging by what I’ve heard of it and what I’ve heard about it, IT’S REALLY FUCKING GOOD. The nerdy elite over at Pitchfork are real into it, and for good reason (you can get it free there as well). Rich Forever includes appearances from big, big names like Drake, Nas, Diddy, Pharrell, John Legend, Kelly Rowland, etc., etc.
“Stay Schemin,” featuring Drake (!) and French Montana, is a highlight. Despite its very questionable Diddy feature, “New Bugatti” is pretty classic Ross: “order crab legs with the heavy butter,” “spend a hundred Gs on a V/ 1.5 for the transport.” Slow song “Rich Forever” features soaring vocals from John Legend and some meaningful “looking back on it all” rhymes from Rozay. “Mine Games,” with its addicting and airy beat and Kelly Rowland hooks, is great. Pump up anthem “Last Breath” (featuring Birdman and Meek Mill) is also pretty great: “I’m ballin till my very last breath/ just bought me a Benz/ just bought me a Rolls/ I pay for that pussy/ I go shopping for hos.” All over the tape, the production is really thought-out and dynamic. Of course, there’s gonna be some missteps (Wale), but everything here is all very high quality, very mixtape-y, and generally very good. Get it here. Why wouldn’t you?
