Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner…The Music Corner…

Holy. Shit. This took me way too long to start, mostly because, lets be honest, I sat on my ass for a month over break, instead of doing everything on the ‘ideal break to do list’ (some of those things would include: looking for and securing a job, learning Pig Latin, finding the Fountain of Youth, solving world hunger, and learning how to knit) but you know what world, it’s time to start.  So what is this you may ask? Or maybe you’re wondering about the title…lets start there.  Well, for those of you who have seen Dirty Dancing (the Patrick Swayze version, not the ABC family rip offs), ‘nobody puts baby in the corner’ is one of the most famous lines from that movie.  And for some reason unbeknownst (5 point word), I could not get this blog title idea out of my head.  Possibly because whenever I saw this scene in the movie, I would not stop laughing (how am I supposed to take Patrick seriously when he says you can’t put baby in the corner? If your legit name is Baby, you deserve the corner), or it could just be because once I get an idea, I run with it.  Like a bee to honey.  Like Noah to an ark.  Like Snooki to the tanning bed.  So, welcome then, to the first ever post of “Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner…The Music Corner…”….might get a little weird, all depends on how much sleep I get…

When I got permission from the radio gods above me (aka my station managers) to have my own blog for the DOOBIE, I was only expected to do one thing: write about music.  Well clearly, but sounds a lot easier said then done.  I’m not really that pompous Indie chick who only refers to music only someone’s second cousin once removed in Portland has heard of; I don’t really go around finding new music, I let it find me…that might also be a metaphor for my life, but that is a totally different story that would take some dinner and drinks first (ha i kid i kid).  But anyway, I realized that almost all blogs out there are ‘new music’ blogs, underground groups creating sounds that are supposed to be part teenage angst, part dubstep, part angry kitten sounds, part salt…and that stuff is great, its different, and individuality in life is KEY.  But. Unfortunately, I am not that music hipster.  So I began thinking, what can I write about that can be both a representation of myself and my musical loves as well as a representation of the universal, finding something that threads us all together invisibly but powerfully.  And then I got it.  Life.

We all have it, clearly, and we can all relate to what that brings and means to each of us.  And what better captures life then music? Music, its lyrics, its melodies, the moods it puts us in (or takes us out of), epitomizes our days, our emotions, our lives, in ways that sometimes we cannot.  And that is a beautiful thing (if this is starting to sound sappy, I apologize, I’m listening to “Your Hand in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky, and its really moving shit.  Like, it makes you want to run up a mountain one moment and then sit on a canoe in open water the next…basically, it makes you a sap ball).  But that aside, music, at least to me, and I’m sure to most people, is our soundtracks.  Some songs just get it, just get us, and our so fitting for the situations and moments in our lives, that we wish the world had speakers, so we could just play it endlessly.  Just think, just picture it.  You’re walking away after a messy fight with a significant other (boyfriend, girlfriend, lover, cat), and the world starts playing Morning Bell by Radiohead…perfect moment.  Or, on a happy note, it’s summer time and youre on a boat with your friends, having a good time, kicking back, being all summer bro-ish, and Livin It Up by Ja-Rule comes on and fills up the whole world. In that moment, everything is bliss, the music gets you.  And so that, ladies and gentlemen and others, is what “Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner…The Music Corner” will be about.  A dash of romanticism/transcendentalism (I’m a creative writing major, cant help it), a sprinkle of saltiness, a cup full of reality, a shit ton of sarcasm/strange humor (as you will grow to know, I have a major filter problem…whatever I think, I say) and an endless supply of love for music and life, and combining them to make one beautiful offspring of a musical soundtrack.  So stay tuned for the next post, and get pumped….maybe my soundtrack will match yours
