Girls Frontman Christopher Owens Planning Solo Debut

Remember Girls? Of course you do. That San Francisco-based band that found critical acclaim with their boringly-titled album, uh, Album, way back in 2009. Then there was the EP Broken Dreams Club (the best thing they’ve done) and last year’s retro-sounding and often beautiful Father, Son, Holy Ghost.

Apparently that was enough for lead singer/mastermind Christopher Owens, because now he’s got a solo album coming out in January. It’s called Lysandre and this is the cover:

It looks a little weird, right? Like, Lysandre? That font? Well, we’ll see. Owens has just released a song (or, to be precise, I suppose, two songs) from Lysandre: “Lysandre’s Theme” and “Here We Go” (listen via SoundCloud).

Did you listen? Honestly, I couldn’t make it through. Sounds a little boring/nerdy to me, but maybe I just wasn’t in the mood right now. I’m sure it’ll be something, but, well, I’m not yet convinced. The press release is calling the album “a coming of age story, a road trip, a love story,” which follows Owens (or the “narrator”) from San Francisco then to New York and then to France, where he falls in love with a girl named Lysandre. NOW I’M INTRIGUED.

Tracklist has some good-looking song titles, too:

1. Lysandre’s Theme
2. Here We Go
3. New York City
4. A Broken Heart
5. Here We Go Again
6. Riviera Rock
7. Love Is in the Ear of the Listener
8. Lysandre
9. Everywhere You Knew
10. Closing Theme
11. Part of Me (Lysandre’s Epilogue)

Stay tuned! Lysandre is due out on January 15 via Fat Possum.
