Best of the Summer 2012
From all your friends here at the Doobie, hello and welcome back to Denison! Hopefully summer treated everyone well. More than well. And now in an effort to keep the summer vibes going, and stave off college for a few more days, weeks, whatever, here is a little list/playlist recounting the best music of the summer 2012. You might get tan and drunk just looking at this post. In no particular order, the best music of the summer:
King Tuff, King Tuff
Vermont’s King Tuff (one guy: Kyle Thomas) has I guess been kicking it around the west coast punk scene for a while. He put out a great (and now very rare) album on L.A.’s preeminent Burger Records back in 2010. In the mean time, he managed to attract the attention of Seattle’s Sub Pop. King Tuff, his self-titled Sub Pop debut, came out back in May and quickly became the perfect soundtrack to start the summer. Thing screams summer from the very beginning, the larger-than-life opener “Anthem,” and does not stop bringing the good vibes. “Keep On Movin’,” “Alone And Stoned,” “Stupid Superstars,” and “Swamp Of Love” are some of the best songs in recent memory. It’s a sunny pop punk record very much in-step with 2012.
2 Chainz, Based on A T.R.U. Story
Okay I’m actually a little tired of this. But it’s a pretty epic summer record nonetheless. It’s got those big fat chords and choruses about drinking and partying and reminiscing about drinking and partying. Singing along to “The Nights of Wine and Roses” is the best. And pretty 4th of July, too, with those thunder/fireworks sound effects going. Too bad they’re Canadian though.

Nicki Minaj ft. 2 Chainz, “Beez in the Trap”
Maybe a little “before summer” for some of you, but it’s a great song, with a great beat, and a great 2 Chainz feature. NICKI NICKI NICKI.
Nicki Minaj, “Starships”
Kanye West ft. Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz, “Mercy”
Besides being the fucking BANGER OF THE SUMMER, “Mercy” is important for a bunch of other reasons. Firstly, it grows on you. I never disliked it (though I must admit it took me a little while to get around to liking Kanye’s verse), but I know people who were not on board when it first dropped. Now those people put it on mix CDs and blast it from their door-less Jeep Wrangers as they cruise the beach, replaying it over and over and over again. Well, it’s okay: it is so good. Secondly, that HOOK. OOOH OOOH OOOH OKAY LAMBORGHINI MERCY YO CHICK SHE SO THIRSTY. Thirdly, that SAMPLE. Fourthly, the verses. Each one has it’s own unique “thing” going and all of them are good. Big Sean, Pusha T and Ye all turn in good work, but alas our boy 2 Chainz steals the entire show. His verse, expertly placed last, after Kanye’s bridge, is perfect. You hear him coming (“2 Chaaaaaaaaaainz” echoing in the background) and then there is, in his “coupe the color a mayonnaise.” OOOH OOOH OOOH OKAY. A classic.

Future, “Same Damn Time”
So much fun!!

Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe”
Song of the summer? More like song of the year. Nevermind this came out who knows when (who does?? It just appeared and it’s been in control since), but “Call Me Maybe” STILL sounds good and when it comes down to it there’s nothing more summer than a classic teenage love song, which is exactly what this is.
Demi Lovato, “Give Your Heart a Break”
Nothing compared to “Call Me Maybe,” but still quite something. Those strings at the beginning and the not-often-expressed-in-pop-music sentiment throughout make this really, really good. Essential radio song summer 2012.

Ca$h Out, “Cashin’ Out”
Dunno what to say about this one. Sorta sounds like Future? Sounds gooood. Respect for not overdoing it with the dollar sign by not putting it in the song title too.
French Montana ft. Drake, Rick Ross & Lil Wayne, “Pop That”
This one feels like it’s like 8 minutes long (it’s 5) and I’m not even sure if it’s that good, but it’s definitely something. There’s a lotta talent here and everyone involved sounds like they’re having a lotta fun. (Of course they are.) I think there’s a chopped n looped 2 Live Crew sample going on and the music video is a big ol’ classic rap-pool-party deal.

Trey Songz ft. T.I., “2 Reasons”
Surprisingly original. And honest: “I only came for the bitches and the drinks.” Any questions???
Katy Perry, “Wide Awake”
Guess this one’s pretty early summer too, but every time it comes on it’s really cool.
Kanye West, “Cold”
Previously known as “Way Too Cold,” previously known as “Theraflu.” This one’s a weird one but a club banger (sometimes) regardless. “I might even kill somebody and YouTube it” is a cool thing to say.
Frank Ocean, Channel ORANGE
I don’t get the big deal with this is (no hooks within like 50 miles), but people seem to really like it so what do I know.
