Action Bronson: ‘Blue Chips’
Dirty, seedy NYC kitchen staff vibes. Vivid tales of sleazy love. Hookers, blunts, gourmet food. Action Bronson’s masterful aesthetic is effortless, real, and enthralling. Action Bronson, fat as fuck with a huge red beard, used to be a chef; Action Bronson sounds almost exactly like Ghostface; Action Bronson is weird.
This is New York revival rap. Grimy soul samples back hard, smoky, highly stylized stories of hookers and fucking and smoking and cooking. Bronson raps in this aggressive but endlessly appealing voice. Ghostface, get over it. “Don’t ever say my fuckin music sound like Ghost shit,” he says on “Ron Simmons,” halfway through Blue Chips. Blue Chips, Bronson’s new mixtape, is a brilliant synthesis of everything he seems to be interested in––cooking, gourmet food, hookers, trashy pussy, 80s NY, blunts, et al. It’s an extremely dense and noir-ish tape. It’s consistent and very enjoyable; Bronson’s rhymes are vibrant and often hilarious. His aesthetic truly is something else. Just the introduction of food adds something sort of insane to the whole gangster vibe. Instantly, you can picture these kitchens, these dirty places, the true underbelly of New York life. It’s an important and fascinating side of New York. “From having money on my mind to having money in my pocket/ bone marrow roasted/ spread it on the rosemary bread/ lightly toasted/ drizzle with the vinaigrette,” he spits on “Tan Leather.” Hold on. That’s something else. That’s exotic in a new way. It’s exotic but at the same it’s not; it’s real, but it’s bizarre to hear in this context. Really, Action Bronson has created an entirely unique aesthetic.
