Video: Raphael Saadiq – “Good Man”
I’d be lying if I said I was familiar with the soul singer Raphael Saadiq before stumbling on his video for “Good Man”. It’s a shame artists of this quality can go relatively unnoticed by the masses for so long. I mean, the man’s been around since 1983, and been nominated for 12 Grammy’s, winning one! Adopting the last name Saadip in the mid-90s, meaning “man of his word” in Arabic, I find, after just listening to a handful of his songs, he is truly that, a man of his word. In most of his tracks, but especially “Good Man”, he’s clearly influenced by soul and R&B artists of the past, swooning about love, passion, and betrayal. The video for said track is especially sad, manifesting what I thought the lyrics were about, but seeing it played out in such a real, haunting fashion leaves chills in my spine.
