Video: Big Boi – “Be Still” (feat Janelle Monae)
Imagine an alternate reality where Kanye West was never born. No “Jesus Walks”, no controversies, no tweets, and worst of all, no My Beautiful Dark twisted Fantasy. I know, it scares me too. Inevitably, in this world there would have been a non-Kanye hip-hop album that reigned supreme last year. One that should have, by all accounts, received much more attention, but unfortunately did not. This album being Big Boi’s Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. Big Boi’s, of Outkast fame, album not only grabbed the #5 spot on Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2010, but seriously sounds like it’s something from the future. One track in particular off the album that captured its retrofuturism is “Be Still” featuring Janelle Monae.
Over the weekend Big Boi premiered the video for said track, and it’s as retrofuture-y as you can get. Filmmaking techniques of 30 years ago meets vision/set design of 30 years from now. Check it out.
