The National Release New Single, Possible Grateful Dead Tribute Album?
When I think of The National, I’m reminded of melancholic, poetic indie rock practically written for heartbreak and gloomy days, which is why it seemed a little strange that the band had released an unofficial single for a video game. ‘Exile Vilify’ was designed to soundtrack the game “Portal 2,” because, according to its publisher, the “raw and emotive music evokes the same visceral reactions from its listeners that Portal does from its players.” I’m guessing it’s kind of a depressing game as the track is about as despondent as most of their other music. Despite its peculiar origins, it’s well worth a listen– stream it below, and if it really suits your fancy it’s now available on iTunes.
The Brooklyn based band continued to surprise fans with the announcement that they would be directing a Grateful Dead covers album. The tribute album would have the same charitable aims as Dark Was The Night, another indie compilation album that they helped curate to benefit an AIDS foundation. Bassist Scott Devendorf emphasized that it would focus more on a reinterpretation of the Dead’s work, as they’re hopeful that bands as eccentric as Crystal Castles will contribute to the album.
