Pretty Lights – “I Know The Truth”
Most of the time when an electronic producer tries to combine dubstep with more melodic, aesthetically pleasing music, the track doesn’t come off very well (this guy’s not bad). There’s usually some sampled melody at the beginning, then comes the standard two-step beat that all dubstep tracks tend to have, and then the drop hits. There’s a whole lotta whomping, and any ties to the original melody are severed. Its like oil and water; its doesn’t mix. I think it’s likely due to the artist’s lack of production ability, as there’s no unifying theme or real progression at all.
All of the above isn’t the case with Pretty Lights new, unreleased track “I Know The Truth.” While I don’t care for the trend of established electronic musicians making dubstep the featured sound of their newest songs (as done by Big Gigantic and heard in an earlier Pretty Lights mashup), this song has excellent sampling, build up, and flow. Pretty Light’s unique style and top-notch production has taking on a very noticable dubstep influence.
While I don’t necessarily want to see Pretty Lights altering his style for good by making it too dubstep oriented, this song (set to a video of Pretty Lights’ Bonaroo 2011 performance below) may signal a coming album filled with more of the same sound to it. And what a sound it is? I don’t know exactly what to call it (I have temporarily termed it funk-step), but for now we will have to wait and see what Pretty Lights has in store for 2011.
