91.1 WDUB

Mac Miller – “People Under The Stairs”

April 20, 2011  /  91.1 WDUB The Doobie

For those who don’t know, Mac Miller is a Pittsburgh based 19 year old rapper who’s just recently burst onto the scene. Like most up-and-comers today, Miller gained fans through the internet, releasing free mixtapes and surprisingly high quality videos for the past few years. He’s got great lyricism, no doubt about it. He’s a gifted rhymer with even better timing, but I’m a little undecided about this guy. He just doesn’t seem to have ‘it’. I think it’s because his voice has the unfortunate tendency of blending each track together. I’ve been sitting here for 5 minutes trying to think of the right word, but I can’t quite find it. It just isn’t that great, so I think it distracts me from his delivery, lyricism, and production. Still, his mixtapes are dope, and his voice is a minor issue for an otherwise hopeful up-and-comer.

Anyway, his recent increase in popularity is being mirrored on his twitter account, and for every 100,000 followers he gets he’s going to release a new single. For the 300K benchmark, Mac Miller remixed People Under The Stair’s “San Francisco Knights”. I would say this is a pretty approproate track for Miller to redo, they each have the same ora of indie-cred. Also, if you haven’t heard any other of Mac Miller’s tunes I recommend changing that. Make your mind up for yourself.
