Lana del Rey “Video Games”
Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is old news. Who didn’t hear this shit way back in, like, August??? Yeah, well, whatever. Excuse us for being a little late to the party. The verdict is still sort of out as to Mrs. Rey’s (actual name: Lizzy Grant) staying power. I was ready to go all in until I saw her trappy ass label’s website and heard about their postponing of her debut single. But none of that really really matters (it does, though). What matters now, and what got Lana here in the first place (other than her lips, hair, shitty Nancy Sinatra for the iPhone generation thing) is her song (yes, song, singular, one song). “Video Games” is a BALLAD the likes of which no one really expected to hear this year. The lyrics are modern, vaguely stream of conscious and sad. Her voice, though, her fucking voice. Like the oft-compared Chan Marshall (of Cat Power, EVER HEARD OF IT?), Grant’s voice has this rich, smoky, sexy NYC vibe going and it rules. It’s not really soul, it’s powerful and warm in a different way. It’s scary.
