Mimosa- 58 Degrees
If there are two things that annoy me the most about the electronic music world today it would have to be, a) the over popularity of shitty dubstep. The kind that has little to no melody, and structures the song around nothing more than a loud, wobbling noise. And, b) the pointless sub-genres everyone all-of-the-sudden feels the need to create. Every artist with a semi-unique sound seems to be getting labeled under a pointless, nonsensical genre. However, when I find myself in a time of desperate rage, when my musical qualms are too much to hanlde, I put on some Mimosa, the artist whose brilliance is not only able to transcend pointless genre labels, but also dabble in each, creating a sound that’s as close to un-categorizable as I’ve ever heard. He’s a dubstep artist first and foremost, but he approaches it with meticulous delicacy, often letting the wobble simply compliment his melodies, synths, and samples. Your head nods and spine tingles because of something so much more complex than an overbearing wobble. In my eyes, it is the perfect dubstep, and Mimosa’s brand new EP 58 Degrees does nothing to discredit my argument. It’s as inspiring as I had hoped, as fresh as I had anticipated, as diverse as I expected, and yet I can’t quite describe it. It is simply Mimosa.
