Childish Gambino – “Break (All of the Lights)”
Childish Gambino, man, how do I introduce this guy? Well, his name is Donald Glover, you may recognize him from the popular internet series Derrick Comedy, or perhaps the much-more-popular NBC series Community. No? Well then you’ve got to know him from his Comedy Central stand-up special, or from his cameo on 30 Rock, which he is also a Writers Guild of America Award nominated writer for. C’mon, this guy is everywhere, and he’s hilarious! But you know what medium is absent from his resumé? That’s right, music. Well, no worries, he’s on that too. He goes by the name Childish Gambino, and released a phenomenal EP earlier this year. Honestly, this guy has the best delivery/lyricism I’ve heard in a while. You can download his EP, Freaks and Geeks, for free (DO IT), but that’s relatively old news. What I’m here to tell you about is his brand new remix of Kanye West’s “All of the Lights”.
Perhaps calling it a remix is selling this tune short. He’s not only added an acoustic guitar intro, but effectively tweaked the tone of this song into something much more intimate and playful. With the most ingenious/ borderline-offensive/ fuckin’ witty/ impeccably delivered lyrics, (“Hollering at this Japanese girl, asian mommy/ But is it too soon for Japanese girls, too tsunami/ Is it racist if I say she taste like edamame/ Was I supposed to stay uncool, please remind me”) Childish Gambino is, perhaps, showing us why NYU educated rappers could be the most entertaining type.
